Korça, one of the largest urban centers in Albania. On the main boulevard in the spring, you will enjoy the special smell of flowers, while in winter it is a pleasure to walk under the crown of snow-covered trees.
In 1887, Korça opened its first Albanian school. In the period of World War I, the city was conquered by the French and at that time it was proclaimed “Autonomous Region of Korça”. In 1917, the French Liceu, one of the most noted schools in Albania, was opened in this city. What impresses you is the special architecture, with villas-type houses, surrounded by railing and yards filled with diverse flowers.
Particularly impressive will be for you the area between the Boulevard “Republika” and “Shën Gjergji”. In this area is located the “Museum of Medieval Art”. “Prehistoric Museum” located in two characteristic Korça flats will offer 1200 objects, which represent archaeological excavations from prehistoric times, early Hellenic, Roman and early Byzantines. Particularly interesting is the museum’s home of the landscape craftsman Vangjush Mio, as well as the Bratko Collection Museum, opened in 2003 with Oriental art works from the Far East.
Other objects of interest are: Korça Bazaar (19th and early 20th century), Iliaz Bey Mirahor’s Mosque 1484 (the oldest monument of the city), Christ’s Resurrection Cathedral (the largest in the Balkans ), the church of St. Ilias from where you can see from above the town etc. In the taverns of the city you will find a cooking flavor that you have not tried before. You can try a lot of things, but do not leave without enjoying the yogurt with onions and tomatoes. Also, do not stay without the helmet cap.
Korça is known for its characteristic songs, called “serenata”, which are accompanied by guitar. Korça is the city of carnivals. They take place on the eve of Orthodox Easter and their ceremony is the greatest and most beautiful in Albania.
